In 1806, the great strategist Napoleon Bonaparte, appreciating the strategic location of Modlin decided to launch in this place a fortress, which soon became the headquarters of the Duchy of Warsaw. The construction of the fortress began in 1807 according to plans of the Imperial army chief engineer F. Chasseloup. The work of fortification took an active part Polish engineers, among others second lieutenant. Ignatius Prądzyński. Formed in the shape of the consolidation of five bastions półwału open from the side of the river. The fortress has been systematically extended to 1812. After the defeat of Napoleon at Moscow, Russian forces launched a counterattack.
For the Modlin Russian army arrived on February 5, 1813. Fortress siege lasted nine months and eventually gave up until December 1, 1813. After the November Uprising, the Russians appreciated the position of the fort and joined it to the Tsar of Russia missile defense system. In 1834 was given a new name of Modlin - Nowogieorgiewsk, the name, as the official survived until 1915. In the thirties of the nineteenth century, the construction of huge barracks with a total length of 2250 m, calculated at 20 thousand soldiers, which until today is the longest building in Europe. In 1844 in front of the fortress at the confluence of the rivers also built neo-gothic granary.
In mid July 1915 the German forces reached the Modlin. August 10th the fortress was cut off from the field units, three days later began firing artillery forums. German troops on August 19 przepuściły attack the citadel and on the same day at 19.00 won the fortress. Shortly after the end of World War fortress again became a place of war. Already in February 1919 broke the Polish-Bolshevik war.
At that time the fortress commander was colonel Edward Malevich. The fortress was intended to fulfill the role of a bridgehead in the defense of Warsaw. Stationed here for the fifth army under the command of Gen. Sikorski in the strength of the 46th thous. people. These forces called Modlin group.
In the period of independence fortress was utilized for numerous types of military schools, the barracks housed the School of Cadets, the Cadet School of Weapons Armoured Engineer Training Centre and many other prestigious units of the Polish Army.
Fortress in September 1939 was an important outpost to defend the capital. Modlin capitulated until 29 September when it was no longer fight, after the capitulation of the capital. Destruction in Modlin were great. Germany used the fortress include the Wermacht conscripts training center. Modlin was liberated on January 18, 1945 by the Red Army.
Since the end of the war to 90s housed the Polish army units here. Currently, the Modlin Fortress is one of the biggest tourist attractions of north-west of this region.
